Here’s how your apprenticeship works

  • 3-year apprenticeship, starting each August, leading to the Eidgenössischen Fähigkeitszeugnis (EFZ)

  • Plus inter-company courses
  • Berufsmatura can be undertaken alongside work if academic performance is good

The three key areas

The apprenticeship has three specialisations. Which one you study depends on the training organisation:

  •
  • - Building maintenance: You will mainly work on buildings and their surroundings
  • - Public works: Your area of specialisation is infrastructure – roads, paths and squares, as well as car parks and green spaces
  • - Sports facilities: You will manage sports facilities

At Zuger Kantonsspital, you will specialise in building maintenance.

Reasons why you should do your apprenticeship at the hospital

  • You’re not maintaining a single building, but an entire hospital complex that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Because operations never stop, quick and flexible solutions are essential. There’s no waiting until Monday here
  • You’ll also be working in medical areas and operating theatres, for example when carrying out maintenance work
  • The hygiene standards that apply to cleaning and maintenance here are unlike anything found in an office building
  • You move around the whole building and work alongside many different professional groups, from the technical team to the nursing staff

  • Vocational examination as a building cleaning specialist
  • Vocational examination as a maintenance specialist

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does the apprenticeship as a Fachfrau oder Fachmann Betriebsunterhalt EFZ last?

The apprenticeship lasts 3 years, starts in August each year and concludes with the Eidgenössischen Fähigkeitszeugnis (EFZ). You will complete the practical part of the programme at Zuger Kantonsspital in Baar, whilst attending vocational training at the BWZ Obwalden in Giswil.

Is a facilities maintenance specialist the same as a caretaker?

Not quite. ‘Facilities Management Specialist EFZ’ is the official title of the three-year apprenticeship. ‘Caretaker’ is the older, colloquial term – and also the title you can earn after completing your apprenticeship by passing a vocational examination and obtaining a federal certificate.

What are the key areas of focus in this apprenticeship?

Three: Building maintenance, grounds maintenance and sports facilities. Zuger Kantonsspital provides training in building maintenance – so you’ll mainly be working on buildings and their surroundings. You can go on to gain qualifications in grounds maintenance – covering roads, paths, squares and green spaces – through a supplementary apprenticeship.

What can I do after my apprenticeship?

A great deal. By passing a vocational examination, you can become a caretaker with a eidgenössischem Fachausweis; by passing an advanced vocational examination, you can take on management roles in facility management. Through a higher Fachschule – or, with a Berufsmatura, by studying at a Fachhochschule – you can even go on to gain a Bachelor’s degree in facility management.

Can I have a taster session beforehand?

Yes. As soon as an apprenticeship vacancy is advertised, we offer a four-day taster apprenticeship. You’ll shadow our housekeeping team and see what the job involves, both indoors and outdoors.
