Your apprenticeship as a Fachfrau/Fachmann Hotellerie-Hauswirtschaft EFZ
During your apprenticeship as a Fachfrau or Fachmann Hotellerie-Hauswirtschaft EFZ, you’ll ensure that everything patients need to get well is in place at Zuger Kantonsspital: clean rooms, fresh linen, meals and a friendly welcome. You’ll organise housekeeping tasks in a large organisation – which is quite different from running a household. You’ll undertake your training with us in Baar, supplemented by work placements at the zuwebe Foundation.

Here’s how your apprenticeship works
3-year apprenticeship, starting each August, leading to the Eidgenössischen Fähigkeitszeugnis (EFZ)
Practical training, mainly at the Zuger Kantonsspital in Baar
In addition, work placements with the zuwebe Foundation: three months per year of the apprenticeship
Vocational school at the Commercial and Industrial Training Centre (GIBZ) in Zug – usually one day a week or in block courses (usually 2 x 5 weeks a year, including inter-company courses)
Reasons why you should do your apprenticeship at the hospital
You’re responsible for a business that runs round the clock – not for a household
Hygiene standards apply to cleaning and laundry here that you wouldn’t find in a hotel: your work is part of infection control
You’ll be in contact with people who are unwell. Friendliness and discretion are just as important here as technical expertise
Each year of your apprenticeship, you’ll spend three months at the zuwebe Foundation. There, you’ll look after guests, provide service and learn about the laundry cycle, including ordering laundry

How long does the apprenticeship as a Fachfrau oder Fachmann Hotellerie-Hauswirtschaft EFZ last?
The apprenticeship lasts three years, starts in August each year and concludes with the Eidgenössischen Fähigkeitszeugnis (EFZ). You will undertake most of the practical training at Zuger Kantonsspital in Baar, whilst attending vocational college at the GIBZ in Zug – usually one day a week or in block courses.
Isn’t that just cleaning?
No. You will be responsible for organising the housekeeping operations of a large establishment: this includes cleaning and hygiene, but also guest services, laundry, catering and administrative tasks. The role requires organisational skills, a customer-focused approach and an understanding of economic, environmental and social issues.
How does this work placement in a hospital differ from one in a hotel?
The hospital operates round the clock, and the hygiene standards for cleaning and laundry here are far stricter than those found in a hotel – your work plays a part in preventing the spread of infection. You’ll also be in contact with people who are unwell and will undertake work placements at the zuwebe Foundation.
Can I have a taster session beforehand?
Yes, and you can do so at any time. During a taster session, you’ll get to know our day-to-day work, the team and the various areas of responsibility, and find out whether a home economics apprenticeship is right for you. Just get in touch with us – we look forward to meeting you.
What do I do at the zuwebe Foundation?
In each year of your apprenticeship, you’ll spend three months at the zuwebe Foundation. There, you’ll look after guests and handle the service, and you’ll learn about the laundry cycle, including ordering laundry. This will allow you to gain experience in a completely different environment to that of a hospital.
