Intensive Care

The Intensive Care Unit at Zuger Kantonsspital cares for seriously injured and acutely ill patients in life-threatening situations, such as when vital organs are failing or following major surgery. In our intensive care unit, a well-coordinated team of doctors and nurses looks after critically ill patients round the clock, using state-of-the-art medical technology and a deeply compassionate approach.

Intensive Care Medicine for Healthcare Professionals

The Intensive Care Unit at Zuger Kantonsspital provides basic intensive care for patients from the departments of medicine, surgery, orthopaedics and traumatology, as well as gynaecology. Our intensive care unit is certified by the Swiss Society for Intensive Care Medicine (SGI).

A specially trained team of doctors and nurses cares for around 800 critically ill patients every year, 24 hours a day. We rely on close interprofessional collaboration, clearly structured processes and a modern medical and technical infrastructure.

Working together for optimal care

High-quality intensive care depends on effective collaboration. Our intensive care staff and doctors work in partnership and closely with the treating specialist disciplines.

Depending on the individual situation, we involve other specialist departments. These include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, nutritional counselling, pharmacy, pastoral care and patient counselling.

Joint ward rounds and the digital visualisation of relevant patient data support interprofessional exchange and coordinated treatment.

Focus on quality and safety

Our treatment and care are guided by the requirements of the Swiss Society for Intensive Care Medicine and by current guidelines. Structured work processes and an actively implemented Critical Incident Reporting System (CIRS) help to continuously improve quality and patient safety.

Equally important to us are the health and safety of our staff, as well as the ongoing promotion of innovation.

Training and Continuing Professional Development

We place great importance on the training and continuing professional development of our staff. Weekly intensive care training sessions, as well as internal and external continuing professional development programmes, support the continuous transfer of knowledge.

Our nursing team boasts a balanced mix of skills and qualifications, with a high proportion of qualified intensive care specialists. As a teaching hospital, we offer a professional environment in which specialist knowledge can be imparted, deepened and further developed.
