Intensive Care

The Intensive Care Unit at Zuger Kantonsspital cares for seriously injured and acutely ill patients in life-threatening situations, such as when vital organs are failing or following major surgery. In our intensive care unit, a well-coordinated team of doctors and nurses looks after critically ill patients round the clock, using state-of-the-art medical technology and a deeply compassionate approach.

Focusing on the patient’s wishes

We do everything we can to understand the values and wishes of critically ill patients and to respect their wishes as fully as possible. To this end, we inform patients about the available treatment options and involve them in the choice of therapy.

If a person is no longer able to express themselves, we reconstruct their presumed wishes with the utmost care. This is based on their advance healthcare directive, as well as the knowledge of their relatives and GPs.

Who can I contact if I have any questions or concerns?

Our intensive care unit team is here for you round the clock. You can contact us day or night on 041 399 49 99 for medical advice or to speak to us in person.

As a family member, how can I help to promote their wellbeing?

Their presence, familiar voices and care are beneficial to critically ill patients. Please discuss with the care team what would be helpful in the current situation and how you can support your loved one.

What is a living will and why is it important?

In a living will, people set out what medical treatment they would like to receive should they no longer be able to express their wishes themselves. It helps us to respect the patient’s wishes – in consultation with their relatives and GPs.

Are children allowed to visit the intensive care unit?

Visits by children are generally possible and are supervised on a case-by-case basis. Please feel free to contact us about this.
