Stoma consultation

Having an artificial bowel or bladder outlet changes your daily life. Our stoma counselling service at Zuger Kantonsspital provides you with expert and empathetic support: both before a planned operation and in the period afterwards. You will receive practical support with stoma care and be assigned a dedicated contact person who understands your situation.

What is stoma counselling?

A stoma is a surgically created artificial opening for the bowel or bladder through the abdominal wall. Stoma counselling is an outpatient service that provides you with training and support in managing your stoma. The aim is to enable you to manage your stoma safely and as independently as possible in your day-to-day life.

How we support you

Even before a planned operation, we’ll explain what having a stoma will mean for your day-to-day life. After you’ve been discharged, we’ll continue to be there for you should you have any questions or problems – on an outpatient basis and close to where you live.

Why choose Zuger Kantonsspital?

Our stoma counselling service works closely with the specialist teams in general and visceral surgery as well as urology. This ensures that your care is coordinated throughout your entire treatment journey – from surgery right through to long-term management.

What is a stoma?

A stoma is a surgically created artificial opening for the bowel or bladder that leads out through the abdominal wall. Stool or urine is collected in a special bag.

Who is the stoma counselling service at Zuger Kantonsspital intended for?

The stoma counselling service is aimed at outpatients with an artificial bowel and/or bladder outlet. We provide support both before a planned operation and during the period following your hospital stay.

When does the stoma consultation begin – before or after the operation?

Ideally, this should take place before a planned procedure: during a preliminary consultation, we will answer any questions you may have and, if necessary, determine the future position of the stoma. After the operation, we will support you with practical care and beyond.

The care is provided by specialist stoma care professionals, working in close collaboration with the visceral surgery and urology departments.
