Robot-assisted surgery is a further development of minimally invasive surgery. The surgeon controls the instruments via a console. This allows procedures to be carried out with a high degree of precision via small incisions.
Its advantages over other surgical techniques
Only small incisions and reduced blood loss aid wound healing and promote a swift recovery. This often results in a shorter hospital stay. We will assess, together with you and our team of experts, whether an operation using the Da Vinci system or another technique is suitable for you.
How does the Da Vinci system work?
The Da Vinci surgical system is operated from a console. A high-precision camera transmits images magnified up to ten times in 3D to a screen. This makes even the finest structures, such as nerve pathways, clearly visible, allowing them to be carefully spared. Via the console, the surgeon controls four articulated arms, which can move, rotate and bend much like the human hand and are fitted with different instruments depending on the procedure. The robot does not perform any movements independently, but is controlled by the surgeon.
Robot-assisted procedures require experience and specialised training. Our surgeons are trained for this purpose at specialist clinics and carry out the procedures on an interdisciplinary basis. Every year, we perform more than 300 procedures using the da Vinci surgical system at Zuger Kantonsspital, currently in the departments of surgery, urology and gynaecology.
