Breastfeeding advice

For many families, breastfeeding marks a special – and sometimes challenging – start to their life together. Our breastfeeding support service offers you empathetic and expert guidance: before the birth, during the first few days with your newborn, and beyond. Whether you wish to breastfeed or feed your baby in another way – we are here to support you.

What is breastfeeding support?

Breastfeeding support involves personalised guidance from trained professionals who help you with breastfeeding and your child’s nutrition. Breast milk provides valuable nutrients and fosters a close bond. However, things don’t always go smoothly straight away. Our breastfeeding support team will help you find a solution that suits you and your baby.

Your support – from pregnancy right through to going home

Even during pregnancy, you can get ready for breastfeeding and clarify any questions you may have in our breastfeeding and antenatal classes. Immediately after the birth, our midwife will support you in getting started with breastfeeding.

To encourage bonding and milk production right from the start, you and your baby are welcome to stay together round the clock (rooming-in). We tailor breastfeeding to your baby’s rhythm and also show you how to manage when you are temporarily separated from your baby.

Before you go home, we’ll set aside time for a discharge consultation. We’ll answer your questions about breastfeeding and expressing milk and, if required, provide information leaflets on various breastfeeding-related topics.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When should I start breastfeeding support?

Ideally, even whilst you’re pregnant: in our antenatal classes and counselling sessions, you can get answers to your questions before your baby arrives. After the birth, we’ll support you during the first few days and beyond.

Will I receive support if I don’t want to or can’t breastfeed?

Yes. Our team will advise you regardless of how you choose to feed your baby. If you are not breastfeeding, we will guide you on how to feed your newborn, without judgement and tailored entirely to your situation.

Can I still make use of the breastfeeding advice service after I’ve been discharged from hospital?

You are welcome to contact our breastfeeding advice service even after your stay in hospital. You can find our contact details here.

How much does a breastfeeding consultation cost?

Compulsory basic health insurance usually covers three breastfeeding consultations with qualified professionals. We would be happy to provide you with information in advance about whether the costs will be covered in your particular situation.
