Knee surgery

Knee pain can have many causes and can significantly affect daily life, work or sporting activities. In the Knee Surgery Department at Zuger Kantonsspital, we treat injuries and conditions of the knee joint using both surgical and non-surgical (conservative) methods.

From the initial assessment through to the choice of the most suitable treatment and on to aftercare, we provide you with personalised support and tailor your treatment to your symptoms, your needs and your individual goals.

Knee injuries and osteoarthritis

We treat acute knee injuries – such as cruciate ligament, meniscus or collateral ligament injuries – as well as conditions caused by wear and tear and osteoarthritis.

Not every knee injury or case of osteoarthritis requires surgery. Where possible, we first aim to alleviate your symptoms using non-surgical treatments and to improve the function of your knee joint. These include, for example, physiotherapy, targeted exercise programmes, medication or injections.

If surgery is advisable, we will discuss the various options with you and, together, choose the treatment that best suits your personal situation.

Conservative or surgical: your personalised treatment plan

The right treatment does not depend solely on the results of an X-ray or MRI scan. The decisive factors are your symptoms, the function of your knee joint, your personal needs and your goals.

Following a thorough examination, we will discuss the possible treatment options with you. We will explain clearly the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure and what outcome can realistically be expected. Together, we will then determine the most suitable course of treatment for you.

Second opinion on knee surgery

Have you already been advised to have knee surgery and would you like to have this decision independently reviewed?

We would be happy to review your previous findings and imaging results, examine your knee and discuss the possible treatment alternatives with you. We will explain the benefits and risks of the various options so that you can make a well-informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When is knee surgery necessary?

Surgery is not necessary for all knee problems. Often, non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy, targeted exercise, medication or injections can help initially. Surgery is particularly worth considering if these measures do not provide sufficient relief, if an injury is affecting the stability or function of the knee joint, or if the symptoms are significantly impairing your quality of life. We will decide together with you, following a thorough assessment, whether surgery is advisable and, if so, which type of surgery is appropriate.

What types of knee injuries do you treat?

Among other things, we treat injuries to the cruciate ligaments, menisci and collateral ligaments, as well as cartilage damage and other injuries to the knee joint. This includes both acute sports and accident-related injuries and long-standing conditions.

What can help with knee osteoarthritis without surgery?

There are various ways to relieve symptoms and improve the function of the knee joint in cases of knee osteoarthritis. These include, in particular, physiotherapy and targeted exercise, supplemented where necessary by medication or injections. We tailor the most appropriate treatment to your individual symptoms and needs.

Does Zuger Kantonsspital offer knee replacement surgery?

Yes. In cases of advanced knee osteoarthritis, a joint replacement may be advisable if non-surgical treatments no longer provide sufficient relief from your symptoms. Depending on the severity of the osteoarthritis, either a partial prosthesis or a total prosthesis may be considered. We will decide together with you which treatment is most suitable, based on your symptoms, the examination and imaging results.

Can I get a second opinion on a planned knee operation?

Yes. We will assess your situation independently and discuss with you the benefits, risks and possible alternatives of the proposed treatment. This will enable you to make a well-informed decision.
