Pneumology

Shortness of breath, a persistent cough or episodes of breathing difficulties at night require an assessment that provides a swift diagnosis. The Department of Respiratory Medicine at Zuger Kantonsspital diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the lungs, bronchi and chest. This service is complemented by the assessment of sleep-related breathing disorders and an outpatient respiratory rehabilitation programme accredited by the Swiss Society of Respiratory Medicine.

What is the field of pneumology?

Respiratory medicine is the medical speciality dealing with diseases of the airways and the lungs. These include asthma, COPD, pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis and tumours. For diagnostic purposes, we have access to a range of tests, including lung function tests, imaging techniques and bronchoscopy.

Sleep-related breathing disorders

Loud snoring, severe daytime tiredness and observed pauses in breathing may indicate a sleep-related breathing disorder, such as sleep apnoea. We carry out a systematic assessment of these disorders and, where necessary, initiate appropriate treatment, including monitoring whether the treatment is effective in everyday life.

Outpatient respiratory rehabilitation

For people with lung conditions, targeted exercise helps to restore fitness and quality of life. Our outpatient rehabilitation programme is accredited by the Swiss Society of Pneumology and combines physical exercise with education and respiratory therapy.

Interdisciplinary collaboration

From a medical perspective, the heart and lungs are rarely considered in isolation. At Zuger Kantonsspital, the departments of respiratory medicine and cardiology work closely together. This enables us to investigate even complex symptoms directly, without any delays. We also work just as closely with your GP and with other specialist departments.
