Outpatient Surgical Centre (AOZ)

Have surgery today and be back home the very same evening: an outpatient operation at Zuger Kantonsspital means you can undergo the procedure and begin your initial recovery without having to stay overnight in hospital. At our Outpatient Surgery Centre, we combine high-quality medical care with personalised support.

What is day surgery?

With day surgery, you undergo surgery on the day of the procedure and return home the very same day. There is no need to stay overnight in hospital. This is made possible by minimally invasive surgical techniques and processes specifically designed for day surgery procedures. This means you can spend your recovery in the familiar surroundings of your own home.

Your stay at the Outpatient Surgery Centre

Our surgery centre is entirely dedicated to outpatient procedures. Two modern operating theatres, ten individual recovery cubicles and a spacious, quiet reception area provide a safe and comfortable setting for your procedure. A team specialising in outpatient surgery will provide you with expert care and take the time to address your questions and concerns.

Safety and Quality

As a patient, you benefit from the same high safety standards as you would for an operation followed by a hospital stay. The infrastructure and procedures are consistently tailored to outpatient procedures and adhere to our strict quality standards. The advantage is clear: high-quality medical care and recovery in the comfort of your own home.

Experience you can rely on

We carry out around 2,300 procedures each year at the Outpatient Surgical Centre. Our interdisciplinary team works closely with the hospital’s specialist clinics, ensuring that the full range of services offered by an acute care hospital is available to you should you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does a visit last for an outpatient operation?

You will usually only spend a few hours with us: after the procedure, you will recover in one of our recovery beds and, once you have been given the all-clear by your doctor, you can spend the evening at home. The exact duration depends on the specific procedure and how you are feeling.

Can I drive myself home after an outpatient operation?

No. You must not drive a vehicle on the same day as you have had anaesthesia or sedation. Please arrange in advance for someone to accompany you, who can take you home after the procedure and, ideally, stay with you for the first night.

How do I prepare for my outpatient operation?

Before the procedure, we will provide you with detailed instructions, for example regarding fasting (eating and drinking) and how to manage your medication. We have set out all the details in the information sheet on your day-case stay. If you have any queries, please contact us on 041 399 44 46.

Is an outpatient operation just as safe as a procedure followed by a stay in hospital?

Yes. You benefit from the same safety and quality standards as you would for an operation requiring a hospital stay. The facilities, team and procedures are fully geared towards outpatient procedures. Should the need arise, the full range of services offered by an acute care hospital is available to you.

Which procedures are carried out on an outpatient basis?

Many elective procedures across various medical specialities can now be carried out on an outpatient basis. Please discuss with your doctor whether an outpatient procedure is suitable for you.
