Preparation

If you prepare well for your stay in hospital, you’ll be able to focus on what matters most: your treatment and your recovery. Here you’ll find everything you need to know before you are admitted to the Zuger Kantonsspital.

Outpatient or inpatient – which applies to you?

For an outpatient procedure, you will come to the hospital on the day of your treatment and will usually go home the same day. For an inpatient stay, you will spend at least one night with us. Most of the preparations are the same in both cases. We will point out any differences to you.

Costs, insurance and forms

Clarify insurance cover at an early stage

Before you are admitted, please check with your health insurance provider or accident insurance provider to find out which costs will be covered. Our specialist staff will be happy to provide you with information about the approximate costs of your planned stay. If you are paying yourself or if your insurance cover is insufficient, please pay a deposit no later than on admission.

You can find further information on cost coverage, advance payment and rates under ‘Fees & Cost Coverage’.

Admission form for an inpatient stay

Please post the completed and signed registration form to us within two working days. This will enable us to obtain a confirmation of cover from your insurance company in good time. If you have already completed the form during a preliminary consultation, you do not need to do anything further.

Treatment in a higher insurance class

Would you like to be treated in a higher care class, with care provided by a senior consultant, and enjoy an extended range of catering options? If so, please contact our admissions department well in advance. They will also be able to tell you what additional costs you can expect. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a change of care class if bed occupancy is high.

‘More Privacy’ upgrade

Patients with general or semi-private cover have the option of booking a twin or single room for an additional charge. Please note that we cannot guarantee your preferred room type if the hospital is at full capacity. In this case, the agreed surcharge will not apply. A ‘More Privacy’ upgrade does not constitute a change of insurance category.

Important information about your admission

Personal preparations on the day of admission

To ensure that disinfection and hygiene measures are as effective as possible, we ask that you do the following:

  • Please have a shower before entering the hospital.
  • Please do not wear make-up or use skincare products such as body lotion, as these may reduce the effectiveness of the disinfectant.
  • Remove any nail varnish and artificial fingernails and toenails.
  • Take off any jewellery, such as rings, earrings, necklaces and piercings.
  • If you have cold symptoms such as a cough, a runny nose or a sore throat, please wear a surgical mask.

Further information on our hygiene measures can be found under Health & Infection Control.

Anaesthesia and medicines

Preparing for anaesthesia

If anaesthesia is required for your procedure, the information leaflet on your anaesthesia and operation will explain how to prepare and what to expect during the anaesthesia. Further detailed information is also available on the website of our Institute for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine.

Your regular medication

Prior to the procedure, please take your usual medication only as discussed with your treating doctor and the anaesthesia team. We will go through the details with you during your pre-operative consultation; further information can be found in the leaflet about your medication.

Please bring your medicines in their original packaging and your current medication schedule with you. During your stay in hospital, our nursing staff will provide you with all your prescribed medicines. Please do not take any additional medicines during this time.

Checklist: What should I take with me to hospital?

This checklist makes it easy for you to check that you’ve thought of everything.

  • Pre-operative information form, if you have not yet returned it
  • Anticoagulation card (blood-thinning card)

Personal belongings

For all patients:

  • Medication taken regularly, in its original packaging, and a medication schedule

In addition, for an inpatient stay:

  • Toiletries
  • Pyjamas or a nightdress, underwear
  • A dressing gown or bathrobe, and possibly a tracksuit

It is best to leave valuables at home

Please leave jewellery, watches, expensive electronic devices and large sums of money at home. If you do, however, have any valuables or cash with you, you can hand them in at Patient Admissions in exchange for a receipt.

The Zuger Kantonsspital accepts no liability for spectacles, contact lenses, dentures, hearing aids and other personal belongings, nor for any valuables that have not been deposited. This also applies to jewellery such as rings or piercings which must be removed for medical reasons or for your safety and which may be damaged in the process.

Plan your journey home and support arrangements in advance

After undergoing anaesthesia, you must not drive or ride as a passenger in a vehicle for 24 hours, as your reaction times may be impaired. You should also avoid making important decisions, such as signing contracts, during this time. This is why, particularly in the case of an outpatient procedure, it is important that you arrange in advance for someone to collect you and accompany you home.

Do you need a transport service such as Tixi-Taxi or a taxi? Our nursing or reception staff will be happy to organise this for you.

Assistance dogs: Obtain authorisation in advance

For hygiene reasons, animals are not permitted in the hospital. Special arrangements apply to guide dogs, therapy dogs and assistance dogs. Please obtain authorisation in advance and bring the completed checklist with you on the day of admission.

Further Information

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What do I need to take with me to hospital?

Please bring your health insurance card, any existing medical ID cards and medical reports, as well as your regular medication in its original packaging along with a medication schedule. You will also need non-slip slippers and socks. If you are admitted as an in-patient, you will also need toiletries, nightwear, underwear and a dressing gown or bathrobe.

Can I take my usual medication before an operation?

This depends on the medication and the planned procedure. Please only take your medication as discussed with your treating doctor and the anaesthesia team. We will go through the details with you during your pre-operative consultation.

Why shouldn’t I use body lotion or make-up before being admitted to hospital?

Skin care products and make-up can interfere with the effectiveness of the disinfectant applied to the skin before a procedure. You should therefore have a shower before entering the facility and avoid using creams, lotions and make-up afterwards.

Can I drive myself home after an outpatient procedure?

No. After having had anaesthesia, you must not drive yourself for 24 hours, as your reaction times may be impaired. You should therefore arrange for someone to accompany you home in advance. If you wish, we can organise a transport service or a taxi for you.

Do I need to make an advance payment before being admitted to hospital?

An advance payment is required if you are paying yourself or if your insurance does not cover the costs, or does not cover them in full. The amount depends on the extent of the procedure. Our admissions team will be happy to give you an approximate figure.

Can I take my assistance dog to hospital?

As a general rule, animals are not permitted for hygiene reasons. However, a special arrangement applies to guide dogs, therapy dogs and assistance dogs. To make use of this, please obtain prior authorisation (information leaflet in German only) and bring the completed checklist (German only) with you on the day of your visit.
