Speech therapy

The speech and language therapy department at Zuger Kantonsspital supports adult patients whose speech, language, voice or swallowing is impaired – whether they are attending as outpatients or are in hospital. The aim of the treatment is to restore your ability to communicate and swallow as far as possible, and to help you regain your quality of life and your ability to participate in social and professional life.

What is speech and language therapy?

Speech and language therapy treats disorders of speech, language, voice and swallowing. These include, for example, aphasia (a language disorder) or dysarthria (a speech disorder) following a stroke, voice disorders and swallowing disorders (dysphagia). At Zug Kantonsspital, this service is aimed exclusively at adults.

Your treatment process

During the first session, our speech and language therapists carry out a thorough assessment to identify exactly where the difficulties lie and formulate a functional diagnosis. Building on this, we work with you to set therapy goals and draw up a personalised treatment plan. This ensures that the therapy is tailored to your personal situation and everyday life right from the start.

Why choose Zuger Kantonsspital?

As part of an acute care centre, the speech and language therapy department works closely with the treating doctors and other specialist departments. These short lines of communication are a particular advantage in neurological and geriatric rehabilitation: diagnosis, medical treatment and therapy are directly integrated.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does the speech and language therapy department at Zuger Kantonsspital also treat children?

No. The speech and language therapy services at the ZGKS are aimed exclusively at adult patients. For children, please contact a practice specialising in paediatric speech and language therapy or your paediatrician.

What is a swallowing disorder (dysphagia)?

Dysphagia is a condition in which the swallowing process is impaired. Those affected often choke or have difficulty swallowing food and drink safely. A speech and language therapist will identify the cause and work with you to practise safe, more comfortable swallowing techniques.

What does speech and language therapy involve following a stroke?

Following a stroke, language (aphasia), speech (dysarthria) or swallowing (dysphagia) may be affected. Speech and language therapy helps you to rebuild lost skills and improve your ability to communicate in everyday life, step by step.

What happens during the first speech and language therapy session?

We begin with a speech and language therapy assessment, which forms the basis for a functional diagnosis. We then work with you to set the therapy goals and draw up a personalised treatment plan.
