Hand and wrist surgery

Our hands are our most important tools and are indispensable in everyday life. We need them for work, leisure and everyday tasks. If pain, an injury or an illness suddenly limits this ability we take for granted, it can have a significant impact on our daily lives.

In the Hand and Wrist Surgery Department at Zuger Kantonsspital, we take the time to understand our patients’ symptoms and individual needs. With a high level of specialist expertise and personalised care, we support you with the aim of restoring or maintaining your mobility, independence and quality of life.

What does hand and wrist surgery treat?

As well as treating common conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome (compression of the median nerve), trigger finger, ganglion cysts or connective tissue disorders (Dupuytren’s contracture), we also carry out all complex procedures for trauma-related, degenerative or rheumatic conditions affecting the fingers, hand, wrist and forearm, such as joint replacement with prostheses or joint fusion (arthrodesis). Our services also cover the full spectrum of trauma surgery for the hand, wrist and forearm (traumatology). In cases of deformities resulting from injuries, we also carry out corrective surgery such as axial corrections or tendon transfers.

From acute care to post-operative rehabilitation

In the event of injuries, we provide acute care for bones, tendons, ligaments and joints, including microsurgical nerve repair under the microscope. Post-operative care is provided by our specialist team of occupational therapists and is carried out in close collaboration with the medical team specialising in hand and wrist surgery. Complex cases are discussed on a regular basis in interdisciplinary meetings.

In cases of severe hand injuries, we work closely with the hand surgery department at Luzerner Kantonsspital.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What conditions does the Hand and Wrist Surgery Department at Zuger Kantonsspital treat?

As well as treating common conditions or simple fractures, we also carry out a full range of more complex procedures on the hand and wrist following injuries, degenerative conditions or rheumatic diseases.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of a nerve at the wrist. Typical symptoms include, in particular, night-time tingling, numbness or pain in the fingers. If conservative treatments no longer bring any relief, an outpatient operation can relieve the pressure on the nerve.

What happens after hand surgery?

Following the procedure, you will also be supported by our specialist occupational therapy team. This targeted follow-up treatment aids recovery and helps to gradually restore the mobility, strength and function of your hand.
