Intensive care today

Intensive care medicine is an indispensable part of acute care. It is used to treat seriously injured or acutely ill patients in life-threatening situations, such as acute failure of vital organs or after major operations.

Although intensive care medicine is very complex in terms of equipment, it is by no means regarded as mere ”equipment-based medicine". Critically ill patients and their needs are at the centre of attention at all times. They are cared for around the clock by our dedicated Intensive Care Unit (ICU) team.

OBJECTIVES OF INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE

Intensive medical treatment is intended to stabilise the life-threatening state of health of the critically ill individual so that he or she can then recover and recuperate in the ward.

KEY MISSION OF INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE

  • Continuous monitoring of vital organ functions of the seriously ill and injured patients as well as of patients after major surgery
  • Therapy and/or functional restoration of inadequate organ function
  • Life saving resuscitation or emergency responses
  • Preventing long-term damage by prevention and early detection
  • Assistance in difficult situations characterised by fear, pain, lack of independence and death

INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE REQUIRES DEMANDING TEAMWORK

Our intensive care specialists are present around the clock to ensure that our patients receive 24/7 care and the highest possible level of safety so that they are provided with the best chances of recovery. The team has received extensive professional training to cope with crisis situations involving the patients and their family members.

The cooperation among the intensive care team of doctors and nurses as well as the inter-professional cooperation with other professional groups is an important prerequisite for the overall effectiveness of intensive care treatment. These specialists also include specialist consultants and specialists from physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutritional counselling and pharmacy.
